Project Description

Inferno, Dante's Visions

An immersive exhibition in which the visitor can ideally retrace some stages of Dante and Virgil's otherworldly journey through the circles of Hell. Along with Charon, the ferryman of souls to Hades, the Furies and Harpies, the visitor encounters mythological creatures, animals that are part of medieval bestiaries and some historical figures such as Ugolino della Gherardesca, Farinata (Manente) degli Uberti, Agnello Brunelleschi, and Paolo and Francesca.

The exhibition itinerary, consisting mainly of the succession of scenes reconstructed in full size, is made evocative by curated immersive sets, soft lighting and background sounds, and enriched by video projections, including that of an actor who personifies Dante Alighieri and who, narrating the scenes in the first person, guides visitors on their journey into the underworld.
Accompanying the exhibition are original editions of the Divine Comedy illustrated by Gustave Dorè (from which the exhibition drew inspiration for the three-dimensional reconstruction of the scenes).
